Abstracting the Landscape (Online Course) Fall 2025 w/ Susan Woolgar

October 29 to November 19 (Wednesdays), 12:00 PM to 2:30 PM, Eastern Time

**All sessions are live and will be recorded, students do not have to be present. All recordings will be available to students for 3 months after the final session, after 3 months the recording will be deleted.

Course Description

One of the most satisfying and enjoyable activities for me is being out in nature, but taking photographs and memories back to the studio and creating dynamic paintings is often an exciting challenge. This 4-week course will focus on finding a new way of interpreting your experience.

Design, colour and mark making exercises will help build a new way of seeing your world and translate it into your work.

Course Outline

Week 1 -

Exploring the world of landscape and photography through exercises in value.

Week 2 -

Expanding mark making and composition through collage.

Week 3 -

Colour theory and developing a palette that works.

Week 4 -

Creating a painting utilizing week 1 and 3 theories.

Course Materials

1-12 X 18 or larger Canson mixed media or watercolour pad. Heavy weight

1-Light weight drawing sketchbook. ( at least 80 pounds) 

Piece of compressed charcoal

Glue stick

Exacto knife

1 set of Nupastals or equivalent.

Caran D’ache water soluble crayons or equivalent 

Selection of round and flat brushes

Pallet knife

Selection of acrylic paint. Titanium white, Carbon Black, Prussian Blue or Pthalo blue, Lemon yellow, altramarine blue, yellow ochre, transparent red oxide, transparent yellow oxide. Cad red light, alizarin crimson or magenta.

1 container CLEAR gesso Please note: must be clear gesso by Liquitex. Regular gesso is not suitable.

1 container MATTE medium

1 roll of low tack tape

Palette for mixing paint

Baby wipes and a spray bottle

1- 2” or 3” soft flat wash brush

1-Catalyst painting wedge
