Course Description

They say that in nature there are no lines. That is true, but painting is not nature. Painting is a language and that language has a particular vocabulary and structure. And line is a big part of that language. Line is the very thing that holds a painting together.

In this course I will demonstrate how line sets the pace in our work. Not only a foundational sketch tool line gives a painting energy and dynamic structure. Each week will have a different subject that I will demonstrate with my particular approach to painting. I will be working in both oil paint and pastel to show the student how line is a common factor no matter what the medium used. Line starts the image, and line can be a major player in the final touches.

Every artist has a particular way of working. In each lesson I will be demonstrating my methods of working and problem solving. Students are encouraged to paint along.

Course Outline

Week 1

I will introduce my materials and talk about how line and line quality is vital to any painting situation. I will do several short demonstrations with vine and compressed charcoal. An outside assignment will be encouraged.

Week 2

More talk of line quality. I will then go into a demonstration of landscape in both oil and pastel. An outside assignment will be encouraged.

Week 3

More discussion of line as I demonstrate a still life subject in both oil and pastel. An outside assignment will be encouraged.

Week 4

I will talk and demonstration on how line is useful in constructing the human figure. Both oil and pastel as time allows. An outside assignment will be encouraged.

Week 5

A discussion and demonstration on how to utilize line in a free form composition. An outside assignment will be encouraged.
