Concept to Completion (Online Course) Fall 2026 w/ Louisa Lorenz

Course Description
In this course, we will explore the process of creating a studio piece from concept to completion. Students will practice painting from life while learning how to curate their own still life or environment to paint from. To set every painting up for success, we will cover the essential steps of creating Notans and color studies.
Each week includes a targeted assignment designed to lead you toward the completion of one strong studio painting. I will work alongside you throughout the process, providing the guidance needed to create a final piece you can be proud of.
Course Outline
Week 1
Discuss composition and shape
Week 2
Discuss value & light and shadow with a focus on notans
Week 3
Discuss color, harmony, temperature with a focus on color studies
Week 4
Discuss texture and edges and begin final painting
Week 5
Discuss how to finish a painting to keep the viewer engaged
