Workshop Description

The objective of this class is to empower you to paint floral compositions in an intuitive manner. Throughout the session, we will begin with abstract techniques, allowing spontaneous marks to guide the emergence of floral arrangements on your canvas. This process is not just a method—it’s a creative journey, a personal roadmap to discovering your unique artistic voice, unbound by the constraints of direct references or physical objects.

Workshop Outline

Week 1 - The Power of Imagination

As Albert Einstein once stated, “imagination is more important than knowledge.”

In our first week, we will engage in a series of exercises focused on mark making. We will also practice working with a limited palette, which encourages creativity and harmony in your artwork. The emphasis will be on generating multiple beginnings—creating a series of '“starts” that will serve as the foundation for the following week. Expect a fast-paced and energizing session.

Week 2 - Painting with Intuition

Reflecting on Claude Monet’s insight, “everyone discusses my art and pretends to understand, as if it were necessary to understand, when it is simply necessary, to love.” We will continue by revisiting the starts created in the previous class. This week, the focus will be on painting intuitively into those initial marks, allowing intuitive responses to shape the development of your florals.

Week 3 - Dreaming and Creating

Inspired by Vincent van Gogh’s words, “I dream my painting, and then I paint my dream.” The final week will be dedicated to applying everything we have learned on a larger scale. This will be an opportunity to expand your practice, bringing together the skills and intuition developed throughout the course to create bold, expressive floral artworks.

Workshop Materials

Acrylic paint:

Cad. Yellow

Yellow Ochre

Cad. Red

Alizarin Crimson

Ultramarine Blue

Cerulean Blue

Transparent Red Oxide

Transparent Yellow Oxide

Black

Titanium White

*Please bring the paint colours you love to use as well. This list is your basic double primary; it works for any painting.

Acrylic Inks - bring a few colours (optional as you can use transparent paint, it’s your choice). I like the Inks as they are very transparent and they cover the canvas well.

Yellows, greens, blues…

Posca pens - my favourite colour is the slate grey but bring your own selection please.

Brush 1” flat and 1.5” flat (I love the angle brushes)

Catalyst wedge

Spray bottle with water in it

Palette

Water container to clean brushes

Several, small containers to mix paint in

Paper towel

140 lb. Watercolour Heavyweight Paper (30 sheet pad)

A support and painters’ tape to fasten your paper to 1 canvas 16” x 20”

White Chaulk and pencils.

NOTE: I use a special ‘sauce’ to dip my brush in, instead of water. It’s a mixture of 1/3 acrylic glazing liquid, 1/3 Matt. Medium, 1/3 distilled water mixed together in a bottle. If you don’t wish to purchase all of these products Matte Medium will work absolutely fine.
