Course Description
In this 4-week courseI will be taking you through my process of Alla prima oil painting-start to finish. I’ll beginby giving you mystep-by step roadmapthat I use when workingonmy own paintings.I will thendemonstratethis process with a copper pot and tea cup showing you the techniques I use to achievethe shine on metal and how to simplify the form on a teacup. Along the way we will dive into subjects likecomposition, values, edges and color harmony. Students will be asked to do their own paintings of thesesubjects which I will be happy to critique each week. In the final lesson we will then bring it all together to complete a full still life painting which will include eithera shiny object or a tea cup and mostdefinitelysome beautiful flowers.
Course Outline
Week 1 –
Painting process run through.
Envelope of big shapes, tonal drawing wipeout to establish values, adding darks then working towards the lights and, finally, adding details.
How to avoid pitfalls and getting stuckin a stage and what to do if that happens. I’m hoping this will increase your flow and maybe even shave someminutes off your painting time. We will do a small demo topractice the lessons learned this week.
Week 2 –
A deep dive into brass or copper.
I will give you a run down on how a create the shine on a metal object. This will involve talking about simplification, warm vs cool color, brush work and how to use your observation skills.
I will do a demo of a still life with a metal object to show my techniques.
Week 3 –
A look at painting tea cups.
I will be focusing on the importance of creating form and how to do it with value, the importance of edges, and how to create color harmony.
I will do a demo of a still life with a tea cup.
