Course Description
This course will focus on accurately drawing and painting the portrait. The importance of working from a high quality reference photograph will be thoroughly discussed. Students will execute a detailed drawing and learn how to employ a monochromatic block-in to properly identify the values of the subject. The class will culminate with a full color application of color, using thin glaze layers of watercolor. The objective of the course is to demonstrate how a methodical approach increases the depth and sense of realism in paintings.
Course Outline
Week 1 -
Discussion of reference photographs and materials.
Demonstration of drawing technique.
Week 2 -
Discussion of the importance of values in watercolor paintings.
Apply a monochromatic block-in over the detailed drawing.
Week 3 -
Discussion of color mixing.
Apply a dead color pass.
Week 4 -
Introduce the full color palette.
Week 5 -
Add finishing touches, using drybrush techniques
