Course Description
This 4-session course suits everyone who is curious about the process of painting a still life. Emphasizing movement, emotion and intention, the sessions designed to follow the process of painting, from the choice of subject, the staging of a scene, building up of a composition, drawing and painting with oil colors.
Each session will contain a slide show presentation of relevant examples from art history, and will focus on different aspects of still life painting.
Course Outline
Week 1 -
Still life as landscape: looking at a composition as a landscape (constructed of sky, ground and horizon) we will focus on values of space (gravity, distance).
We will start by building a setup, a composition, selecting format and color scheme. We will start drawing and then working with color.
Week 2 -
Still life as portrait: focusing on the subject’s particularity. Each object could project a specific character, personality and expression. By dealing with still life in such manner, we can make a personal, expressive piece out of the most trivial objects. Here too, we will start with a setup of a scene and composition, drawing and painting with oil color.
Week 3 -
Still life as abstract painting: In the third session, we will focus on formal values (composition, movement, weight, density, color and form). We will look into building a color arrangement and composition to emphasize our vision and intention.
As in all sessions, we will work through all stages from drawing to the complete oil color piece.
Week 4 -
Still life as symbolism: here all previous categories join to create a still life, which, by setting up an interesting composition, by means of a conscious selection and arrangement of subject matter becomes a painting both personal and meaningful.
