Workshop Description

Helen Frankenthaler and AR Penck were both expressionist artists, living and working in roughly the same time span. In this course we will be taking a deep dive into the expressive practices of both artists, using them both as influences for our own work. From abstract expressionist colour compositions to Neo expressionist symbolic scenes, we will journey through image making with AR Penck and Helen Frankenthaler leading the way with me as their medium. With a focus on the raw and instinctive act of creation, this class aims to reinvigorate your art practise through an experimental and fun approach.

Workshop Outline

Week 1 - Helen Frankenthaler

In the first week we will be looking at the art of Helen Frankenthaler in the context of abstract expressionism. We will explore various techniques to create colourful abstract images by utilising the friction between control and chance. We will be using techniques to help engage us fully in the act of making whilst analysing and deconstructing what makes a successful composition.

Week 2 - AR Penck

In the second week we will be looking at the works of AR Penck in the context of Neo-expressionism. Taking a more figurative approach, we will utilise techniques to help depict scenes from both observation and imagination. We will be engaging in exercises that aim to detach our critical minds allowing us full immersion in the act of creating a scene. With the influence of AR Penck, and therefore cave painting, we will attempt to condense our drawings down to their bare essential form.

Week 3 - Combined

The last week will be an amalgamation of the previous 2 weeks. By using collage, we will combine abstract colour fields, with raw figurative imagery to create fully formed paintings/drawings.

Workshop Materials

Charcoal

Oil pastels

Graphite sticks/pencils

Scissors

Glue stick (or rice glue)

Gouache/Acrylic/Coloured Inks

Paintbrushes

Japanese papers (Kitakata recommended)

Variety of drawing papers
