Exploring Watercolor (Online Course) Summer 2025 w/ Bernard Collins

Course Description

During this course we will use transparent and opaque watercolor and gouache paints to capture images pre-selected by the instructor. We will explore the use of several mediums as well as painting techniques and discuss how they affect the paintings we create.

Course Outline

Week 1 - Landscape 

We will use atmospheric perspective in painting and explore mark making and how this can be used.

Week 2 - Figure painting 

We will paint a predetermined figure as a group. In this class we will discuss the palette we choose to paint flesh.

Week 3 - The portrait 

We will discuss the anatomy of the face and discuss techniques in watercolorPortrait painting.

Week 4 - Self portrait 

We will use the grid to create a self portrait and discuss how this technique can be useful in watercolors and beyond..

Week 5 - Still life 

The class will conclude with a still life painting, we will discuss traditional watercolor approaches as well others, and talk about compositional choices.

Students will be encouraged to create works based on the course on their own as well and share with the class for critique.
