Painting an Expressive Portrait (Online Course) Summer 2025 W/ Jerry Salinas

June 11 to July 9 (Wednesdays), 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM, Eastern Time

**All sessions are live and will be recorded, students do not have to be present. All recordings will be available to students for 3 months after the final session, after 3 months the recording will be deleted.

Course Description

If you have ever painted from a photo and realised your painting is lifeless, this class will help you get passed that problem. We will take a photo reference and push the colors and symply values. Express yourself with amazing color mixtures using a limited and expanded palettes of colors. Anything goes in this class! The control will come in the drawing and the simplification of values and the edges.

Course Outline

Week 1

We will look at bad photo reference and see how we can improve them. You will also watch a demo of me mixing colors from limited palette and using 3 values to start a portrait.

Week 2

More mixing of colors for different skin tones under various light. Value and temperatue will always be discussed.

Week 3

I will do a demo painting from a black and white photo in full color in a expressive manner. Temperature and edges will be stessed.

Week 4

We will look at the features of the face and talk about planes and how light affects them.

Week 5

Full portrait demo with expressive color using every tool in my arsenal.
