Course Description
This 5-week course will cover ways to see, memorize and organize the visible world,
inventing graphic responses to that world.
Course Outline
Week 1 -
MINDSET Constancy, Viewfinder, Inverted Images
Schema/simplification - Art Historian Ernst Gombrich’s ideas. Schema, conventions, traditions. “Making comes before matching”. Drawing according to Winston Churchill (from Gombrich’s Art and Illusion) – page 38. Gestalt Seeing
Week 2 -
MECHANICS Lighting, Holding your drawing tool, Blending, Erasure (kneaded eraser = lift; plastic eraser = rub out)
Week 3 -
LINE Contour, Cross-Contour, Sighting, Geometrics (see schema/simplification above)
Week 4
VALUE and SPACE
Week 5
GESTALT SEEING, COMPOSITION and MOTIF
Course Materials
Graphite pencil (H to HB)
Charcoal (vine and/or compressed)
Conte (red or black and white, if working on toned ground)
Ball-point pen
Papers (pH-balanced) of medium size, pre-toned (gray) or white
Sketchbook, if desired
Pencil sharpener and sandpaper block
Kneaded and/or plastic erasers
Fixative, if desired
Acquiring the book Observational Drawing by Joseph Podlesnik for the course is encouraged, as the course will be following the text.
