Workshop Description
This three-week workshop concentrates on colour and paint. We will learn about colour mixing and paint application. Through a series of enjoyable exercises we will strengthen your knowledge and confidence of colour. Once we have developed the tools and skills necessary we will progress towards working from a still life subject.
This set of workshops is suitable for beginners and improvers and is a jump in learning for any artist who wants to explore colour within their painting practice.
Lizzie will share artwork from other artists and her own work to inspire you.
Workshop Outline
Week 1 -
Starting with an introduction to Lizzie Black’s studio and work. Colour: We will go through some practical fun exercises such as making a colour wheel and learning how to mix colours by creating colour swatches. We will learn about primary and secondary colours and how to mix cools and warm hues on your palette.
Students will learn about applying paint and become familiar with the qualities and consistencies of oil paint. Building up layers and creating depth. We will experiment with how to put the paint on the canvas, different mediums and brush techniques, drying times and impasto effects.
Week 2 -
With the knowledge we have gained through colour mixing we will experiment painting directly from two different still life arrangements using different palettes eg: a limited palette and an extended palette of colours. We will experiment with brush marks, developing an understanding of the quality of paint on the surface. We will delve into the impressionist artists and observe their use of colour and make studies in response to our observations.
Week 3 -
Painting Together: A guided demonstration with Lizzie Black. From start to finish Lizzie will set up a still life arrangement and take you through some of the basic compositional considerations: creating a dynamic and interesting subject to paint. Students will have the option of observing the demonstration and taking notes and asking questions, joining Lizzie in their own individual still life arrangement or working from her reference photo that will be shared online. Lizzie will paint alongside the group enabling students to watch her painting develop throughout the session.
