Workshop Description
Over three weeks, this painting workshop invites students into an intimate exploration of colour, touch, and form. Beginning with the brush as an extension of oneself. Students learn to mix and apply paint with sensitivity and intent. As each week unfolds, they are encouraged to let go of control and allow form to emerge through playful improvisation and painterly response. In the final stages, emotion and intuition guide the work toward resolution. Through the physical act of painting, students deepen their connection to subject, paint, and application.
Workshop Outline
Week 1: Reclaiming the Palette
The first thing I think about as my loaded brush touches the surface of the painting is “how can this paint with this brush can become these pears?”
Brush Technique.
Palette, Colour preparation.
Drawing with Paint.
At the end of this session the student will have a better understanding of the brush as a vehicle for paint mixing and application. The student will learn about colour choice and the role colour plays creating space and form. The student will have increased confidence in painting wet into wet and increased confidence of building layers of paint to create a painterly effect.
Week 2: Response
Just like in the drawing the next step is repositioning, encouraging the brush to distribute and redistribute the paint across the surface. I know the pears will appear if I allow them too.
Improvising with paint with an emphasis on response.
Bring form to life.
Week 3: Making the Picture
Once I see the pears and feel their presence I allow my spirit to carry the painting through to some kind of completion. It's all a surprise.
Emotional Impact.
Reading the image.
The student will be encouraged to commit emotionally to the subject matter and be able to relate and discuss the physical sensations of painting to the painting's success. I felt it, it’s better.
