Course Description
The course explores how flat color can be used not only decoratively but also as a structural tool to build form, depth, and atmosphere in painting. Through still life and portrait painting, students will study how simplified color relationships can support realistic image-making while keeping the painting fresh, expressive, and painterly.
Across four weeks, the course moves from flat color in still life to more complex applications in portrait painting. Each session includes a presentation, homework reviews, and a pre-recorded painting demonstration. Special attention will be given to suggestion: how to imply form, detail, and depth without over-rendering, allowing the image to remain open, vivid, and visually engaging.
