How can art history become a creative tool rather than a source of imitation? Beginning with Pompeii and ending with contemporary painters, students will examine the evolution of still life while building a shadow-box arrangement and developing one sustained painting over three weeks. Through lectures, demos, and critiques, historical ideas about composition, symbolism, color, and light become practical strategies for creating original work.
Week 1
Pompeii through the nineteenth century: how and why ordinary objects become compelling compositions. Students will develop an arrangement and thumbnails.
Week 2
The expansion of still life from the seventeenth through nineteenth centuries, including artists such as Chardin, Fantin-Latour, Courbet, and the Impressionists, composition, color, symbolism, and the evolving role of still life. Transferring and underpainting block-in.
Week 3
Considering how contemporary painters continue to reinvent the still life and developing paintings with value, color, texture and edge quality.
