Workshop Webinar Description
Build creative confidence by balancing intuition, decision-making, and embracing imagination. We will begin by intuitively creating atmosphere in our paintings, this will provide us with a solid foundation to work off of. The placement of shape, line and color are the key ingredients to developing our compositions. I will emphasize keeping each painting “open” for as long as possible - exploring, experimenting, and letting the work evolve naturally. We don’t want to get bored too quickly and paint ourselves into a corner. Trust your intuition, build creative confidence, and let your imagination take the lead. Practice a dynamic cycle of construction and deconstruction in your artwork to produce unexpected results.
We will be working from life using still life. You will be required to set up your own still life with adequate lighting. In this short class time structure, this controlled environment will be less distracting and we can focus more on the painting concepts rather than “what” it is we are painting. You should be able to apply these same concepts to any other type of subject matter in your own practice.
Workshop Webinar Outline
Week 1:
I’ll be discussing materials and surface preparation. First lessons will be focused on creating atmosphere and how to approach our first layers of a painting. “Blocking in” and keeping the painting open. A slide show and demo illustrating these concepts followed by a Q&A.
Week 2:
We will begin to establish our compositions by applying simple shapes, lines and notes of color to our surfaces. Looking for what is important in our subjects and how they can imply foundations in our compositions. Slide show and demo illustrating these concepts followed by a Q&A.
Week 3:
How can we keep the paintings open for as long as possible? How can we discover something more exciting than just copying what we are seeing? This week will be a fusion of week 1 & 2 ideas, with a leaning towards destruction and re-construction. Searching for more pieces of the puzzle and refining our shapes, colors and values. Slide show and demo illustrating these concepts followed by a Q&A.

This is a recommended material list, please feel free to use at your discretion. I’ve added links to particular items that I like to use. You can add your own colors, if you prefer, as the paintings progress.
Oil paints - I recommend starting with a limited palette like this:
- Titanium White
- Ultramarine Blue
- Cadmium Red – Light or Medium
- Cadmium Yellow Medium
- 3 to 5 gessoed substrates - canvas, linen or wood panels. I prefer wood panels or double oil primed linen. For class purposes keep sizes no smaller than 10” and no larger than 20”
