Course Description
This 4 week course we will create smaller works emphasizing color and moving away from realistic expressions of form to create impactful art. After exploring these artists and their methods, you will learn about mixing color mixing from a limited palette, strategies to simplify a scene, and ways to create light.
Course Outline
Week 1: Welcome & Introduction, slideshow of Fauvist art, demonstration showing how to approach this style of painting. Demo, questions & homework
Week 2: Flattened Interior inspired by Matisse..Simplifying a scene and creating patterns. Demo, questions & homework.
Week 3:Land or Sea inspired by Derain...Pushing your palette and balancing shapes. Demo, questions & homework
Week 4: Flowers inspired by Dufy...Combining line with washes of color. Demo, questions and homework
Course Materials
Acrylic or Gouache Professional Grade Paint: Find a simple set of 6-8 colors and white
Several synthetic brushes, flats and rounds under 1 inch size
Mastersons Sta-Wet Palette for acrylic or watercolor palette(gouache)
Substrates: Watercolor paper for gouache OR smaller canvases or acrylic pad for acrylic. We will work no larger than 8 x 10
Jar for water, paper towels
Your imagery to work from: Landscapes, seascapes, flowers, interiors. Instructor will provide one each week as an an option.
